The Outcast is a very good read. Sadie Jones writes strong characters and it bundles along a pace.
One thing - given the novel is set in the 50s, I was surprised that one of the characters cuts themselves (as in self-harm). I'm probably wrong but I thought this was something that young people started doing in the past 10 years or so?

Our book group read The Outcast last month. We all agreed that as far as we know 'cutting' is a fairly recent phenomenon. One of the group is a lady in her seventies who was irritated by the modern tone of the novel. I must admit I found the book adolescent in many ways and none of us found it very convincing. I think Sadie Jones has talent and may well write a very good book when she turns her pen to something which she has experienced.
