has anyone read the Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst (won the Man Booker prize)? What did you think?

A gay Brideshead Revisited for the 80s. I found it disappointing - predictable and over-written. I thought the 'Line of Beauty' was quite funny though - among other things it's the shape of a bottom!
I don't think I'd recommend it.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't feel it said anything new about that decade (for those of us who were old enough to know what was going on!)

I was very disappointed.Too many pages with too little to say. The whole story could have been told better in about 150 pages. Needs to be edited or re-written by some one like J.M.Cotzee. "Look how big my brain is" kind of book in the Salman Rushdie mould. Give it a miss and use your time to read something better.

Hi

Thank you all - I think I'll give that one a miss. What about The Promise of Happiness by James Cartwright - I liked the sound of the cover blurb icon_question.gif

I've just read The Promise of Happiness and thought it was great. Has anyone read Justin Cartwright's White Lightning? I might try it next.
